Mariyamala – Pazhuthuruthu
Hills have certain stories. While some attract us with the beauty of nature, others find a place in our hearts through memories of faith, prayer, and silence. Among them is Mariyamala, a beautiful hill region standing quietly and proudly near Kaduthuruthy in Kottayam district.

Dressed in a mantle of greenery, far away from all hustle and bustle and blending into the silence of nature, Mariyamala is a lesser-known regional beauty. This beautiful hill is situated in Pazhuthuruthu, where the borders of Neezhoor Grama Panchayat and Kaduthuruthy Grama Panchayat meet.

Mariyamala – The Natural Beauty of Pazhuthuruthu

Included in Vaikom taluk of Kottayam district, Mariyamala is not a very large hill in terms of height. However, this hill, which combines the tranquility of nature and rural beauty, has a uniqueness of its own.

Rubber plantations, other farmlands, and green hillslopes together give Mariyamala a wonderful rural character. Looking out from the hilltop, the vast paddy fields of Neezhoor and Kaduthuruthy along with the rural scenery of Pazhuthuruthu refresh the mind.

Mariyamala Ashram – Under the Shade of Faith

The greatest specialty of Mariyamala is the Mariyamala Ashram (Mariyamala Ashramam, Pazhuthuruthu) located here.

Named after the Blessed Virgin Mary, this ashram is associated with the Benedictine monastic tradition. The spiritual heritage of the Order of Saint Benedict (OSB) defines the characteristic nature of the ashram.

It is a tranquil place of Christian monastic tradition that places importance on prayer, meditation, silence, and spiritual life.

A place that can guide the mind away from the noise and busyness of the outside world into a realm of prayer and spiritual reflection.

Therefore, Mariyamala is not just the name of a terrain; it is also a symbol of faith and spirituality.

A Journey Close to Nature

Upon arriving at Mariyamala, the first thing one experiences is its tranquility. Leaving behind city rush and vehicular noise, traveling along village roads up the hill reveals another face of nature before us.

Green-draped paths, rubber plantations, farmlands, and expansive paddy fields stretching into the distance... every sight recalls the simplicity of the village and the beauty of nature.

Another unique feature of this region is that there are pathways leading up to the hilltop from three directions.

Landmark of the Land, Place of Memories

To the locals, Mariyamala is not merely a center of faith. It is also a region intertwined with the memories of generations. Familiar paths, encounters, prayers, and experiences are connected with Mariyamala for many.

The greatness of certain places lies not in their height or expanse, but in the experiences they create in human hearts. Mariyamala is one such place.

This small hill, combining the greenery of nature, the peace of spirituality, and the goodness of the village, stands as a wonderful landmark of our land.
